I LOVE TO READ MONTH IS HERE!!!- AND MORE!

We came right out of the gate with Dress Up as Your Favorite Book Character/Book Day.  Nice to see some of the favorite books or characters our staff and students love. 

The grade 1-4 classes FINALLY went on their ski trip to Ski Valley on the 4^th.  Third time was the charm, that darn old minus ridiculous conditions were dictating our schedule!  So, I guess it was meant to be that it happened in February. The grades 5-8 also had a great day Feb 20^th at Ski Valley.  The kids had a great time navigating the slopes.  Everyone started together no matter their experience then branched off as the day went on.  It is a great experience for students to try if they never had before.  A break away from the school gym is a good thing.  A BIG THANK you goes out to staff for organizing everything at the school end, to the parents that volunteered, and last but definitely not least to the Parent Group who funded the excursion.  Thank you for everything you do to help bring these experiences to our students.

I LOVE TO READ MONTH:  many activities happened throughout the month.

• Buffalo Fluffalo -Story Voice:The grade 1-4 classes had the opportunity to listen to a live (pre-recorded) reading from the illustrator, Erin Krann.  At the start of the video, she spoke a bit of the process which ties in imagination, research, and process to creating the character/s and visual setting which matches the authors vision and storyline.  She then read the story which contains a wonderful message of self-acceptance.  Buffalo Fluffalo tries to be bigger than he actually is and when it rains his true self appears.  Being proud of who YOU are is the moral of this story.  When Erin finished the story, she led the audience in a step by step drawing demonstration of Buffalo Fluffalo.  All students were engaged, and Erin did a fantastic job describing every step which students would understand.  For example: horns were the shape of half of a banana, the tuff of his hair on his head was the shape of a small cloud and his body was the shape of a large cloud.  She also described the nose and leg as rectangular shapes and so forth.  It was a fun 30 minutes and everyone’s Buffalo Fluffalos looked so good!!It was a nice switch to have the illustrator talk about their part of creating a story.

   

• Reading Challenge: Grades k,½, 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8- All received a reading challenge that started on Feb 6^th and ran to Feb 25^th.All students were encouraged to participate in the challenge. K-Catepillar challenge(Write title of book).Grade 1-4 20 books in 20 days (Write Title of Books), Grade 5/6 10 pages per day challenge, and Grade 7/8 record how many pages you read in a day.

  All students who completed these challenges were entered in to win wonderful book prizes😊.

   

• Bookmark Creations with Ms. Robinson:  Students had the opportunity to spend a noon hour with Ms. Robinson creating unique bookmarks.  Grade ½ had the choice of either a stack of books or butterfly, the Grade 3-6 classes enjoyed making either a snake or dragon, and 7/8’s

  Made a stained-glass bookmark. 

• Guest Reader:  We were so thrilled to have our “Guest Reader” and author, Lisele Lindsay back in our building!  Mrs. Lindsay was our previous Guidance Counselor and Kindergarten teacher a few years ago. In amongst her busy life as an educator, wife, and mother, she also fulfilled a dream of becoming an author, writing her own book which was written with so much compassion and thought to teach kids about personal space and respecting others and how to center yourself in a safe and calming way. Thus, “RUBY’S BUBBLE”, came to be.  Lisele Lindsay was so happy to read and share her author experience, how she created the story, talk a bit about the illustrator and how he brought her characters to life in her book.  We thank you Lisele for spending the afternoon with us.

• Spirit Week: Library themed spirit week were based on books for the last week of the month.
  

  Monday-A Bad Case of Stripes Day-wear something that has stripes.

  Tuesday-Click Clack Moo:  Wear Black and White

  The Day the Crayons Quit:  Dress in Your Favorite Color

  Where the Wild Things Are:  wear something WILD

  Don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late:  Wear your PJ’s and Lights Out-in the gym.

   

• DEAR TIME: Drop-Everything-And-Read.  The school participated once a day for 10-15 min of reading time throughout the month.  There was a beautiful silence and whispers of reading.

   

• Library Escape: Will be taking place in March. Stay tuned.
